The Gentleman Here Before Me

If it was me taking the job
Of the legend, retired after thirty-three years
I might prefer to settle in
Do what was expected of me
Sometimes, maybe, a little more
Sometimes not quite as much
Enjoy the easiness of my relaxed co-workers
No longer adjusting daily
To the demands of his imagination
Or having to find the inner strength to stand
With or against
The awakened souls of those he touched.
How nice it would be for them
My colleagues, that is
Not to have to aspire to something greater.
